Remembrance

CARTE BLANCHE #31

remembrance
Spring, Charles-François Daubigny

I have a (pretty) good memory. Depending on the length between the event and me, I can tell when it was. Down to the day or to the month. Sometimes, I don’t even need an event, it is only an ordinary day, an empty day. Thus, I know exactly what I was doing, feeling, being, October, 9th 2025, but also October, 2018.

Like my own little remembrance.

As a matter of fact, when I was asked one day (first week of 2022 if you want to know – maybe 1st of January but I wouldn’t bet my life on it) what was my super (but “useless”) power, I said: “time an event to the month”.

My life, in my head, looks like a historical timeline.

It then works reversed: I can’t remember an event or an ordinary day if it doesn’t fit in my personal timeline.

This specific and precise memory grounds me but it may also backfire: today’s day is full of last year memory + two or three years ago. I remember happy days, I remember rainy months. And it blends into my daily days with more or less sweet melancholia.

Every day becomes a meeting with my story. With vanished happy hours. With longing frantic kisses. I can fit them in my timeline to the hour and acknowledge present time is empty.

Like my own sore remembrance of the lack of you.
